Stakeholder Relationships

Pike River invests in establishing and maintaining effective national and regional relationships with the legislative and local government decision-makers and implementers.

There is a wide range of regulatory and legislative requirements applicable to a coal mine.

Pike River works closely with the Ministry of Energy and Resources, Ministry for the Environment, Department of Conservation, Crown Minerals, the local Iwi Ngati Waewae, the Grey and Buller District Councils, and the West Coast Regional Council.

Following the opening of the mine in October 2008 by the Minister of Energy and Resources, the Hon Gerry Brownlee, it was also heartening during 2009 to receive visits from the Minister of Conservation (at the time), the Hon Tim Groser and DoC chief executive Alan Morrison, the Leader of the Opposition, the Hon Phil Goff, and the Minister of Labour and Associate Minister of Conservation, the Hon Kate Wilkinson (now Minister of Conservation).
